In 1956 Israeli, French and British forces invaded the Suez Canal zone. The Israeli's did not want the nationalization of the canal caused by egypt and invaded. The French and British then invaded in order to protect the Canal.
 
The Egyptians decided to sink ships in the canal so that the invaders could not use it.
 
French and British vetoes denied the UN to take action
 
On November 2 the UN Assembly called a halt for the hostilities and a withdrawal of forces.
 
The french and british agreed, but only if a United Nations force be stationed in the area and see to it that canal opened.
 
On November 4 Lester Pearson of Canada introduced a resolution that called for the establishment of a emergency force which was called UNEF (United Nation Emergency Force).
 
UNEF arrived in egypt in mid november and for ten years they patrolled the borders between Egypt and Israel
 
On may 18 1967 the United Nations were asked to withdraw by Egypt since hostilities died down. They agreed.
